In Which the Divagation Store reaches the 900 posts Milestone! Reflection on Why...

Good morning, my friend, dear reader of this present post! How are you today, this new week? It should be the last one for February, quite soothing that it will end on a Sunday as well, given it started on a Sunday, too! As for me, I did sleep quite a bit yesterday, but I cannot complain of not being a productive day, given I finished reading the biography of Madame de Pompadour, written by Nancy Mitford. Quite a good one, and in fact, I would say is a great one! What a remarkable lady she was, the great patronesse of Rococo, though she sensed a move in France towards a more neoclassical direction, and overall set the sails on the direction of the style of the next era, the one called Louis XVI style, though in truth it was the queen Marie Antoinette who truly set the tone. I like this topic, and I love her majesty. Though the late rococo she preferred was hinted with an antique tint, it was not the more sober neoclassical of the 1790's and the Napoleonic era. She brought flowers a...

In Which we say Hello to April 2023! Chocolate and Economy

Hey friend! I am so happy to see you today, on this first day of April, a date that lives in infamy because of April Fools. I hope you are not victim to any of those annoying prank, as those are so obnoxious. April is also the month of Easter, a date that means the celebration over the resurrection of Jesus, when He defeated death and ascended to the heavens, and soon after the beginning of the Christian movement on the Judaic religion, that some decades later would become its own religion. Easter is a very nice holiday, not as special for me as Christmas, true, but also a time for nice decorations and chocolate! Those who can get beautiful chocolate easter eggs, though unfortunately, due to the socialist tendencies of the world today, this number goes downwards, which is reason for Melancholy. The way to get more people having chocolate, as on moments of lesser socialist policies, is going away from the welfare state, cutting taxes and drastically reducing expenditure. Cutting regulations as much as possible, tackling inflation and restoring a proper anchor for money, on other words: stop money printing. It is to fight corporatism, not with more intervention, but with less, because on a true free market, the incentives for monopoly and so on are drastically reduced. And this shall offer people the canvas for a cultural renaissance, that values good practices, such as saving, investing, treating others with dignity, all the characteristics of the entrepreneurial spirit. In case you are wondering, no, it is not an easy nor fast path, it would take years for a country to recover from Keynes’s ideas and cultural marxism. Also, it is true those are more economic focused goals, but economy is the canvas for a proper life, that above it shall have beauty, truth, reasonable folk, individualism, and helping others if one so is inclined to do so, through mutual cooperation and initiative. Yes, reading the biography of Lady Thatcher is helping me cementing the ideas I already had. That being said, though, the point of the book I’m in, it introduces the entropy of her government, with her ambiguity towards European Union, her resistance towards adopting the exchange rating mechanism, conflicts with her colleagues, and the need to redo her cabinet, that caused adverse effects. It is implied there will be a scandal involving something Westlands, though I just started this chapter now. It is painful to read the decline of her capabilities.

A bit of orange to begin this April!

It was never an easy path, the one, specially on politics, of some liberalism, that is true, liberalism that once made Britain so great of a nation, with the empire cemented on the rule of law, that once never saw the sun setting. My fellow libertarians do say, with so much wisdom, that there is no such thing as a path to salvation through politics, tempting as it may be. And this temptation, present specially on liberals (Classical Liberals and so on), was not something that was born with her, that was a conservative, to begin with. I am reminded of the ministers of Louis XV and Louis XVI, that were successful in spreading their ideas towards the kings, but not as successful in spreading those towards the public, not even their fellow intellectuals, that in France, quickly went on a dangerous path of wanting to get thunders from the Sky, forgetting that those are deadly and will kill whatever in their path. I have Rousseau and Voltaire in mind, when thinking of such branch of enlightenment philosophy. So… yes, it starts on the realm of ideas, and one can only save himself. Fun, I started talking about Easter, and here we are, now exposing some philosophical questions. Just like Milton Friedman used the production chain of the humble pencil to illustrate the complexity of economics, I use my chocolate deprivation to exemplify the bad consequences of socialism, and what a long road you have if you want to avert such scenario, as my reality, the one of an increasingly impoverished middle class, is also the reality of millions of sad brazilians that even with seeing their purchasing power declining year after year, still find reasons to smile… I believe this reflection is quite a good way to start April, don’t you think? Have I made any sense at all? Well… it is on the name of this place, the divagation store, when one thought leads to another and soon we are traveling through our minds. I was planning first on writing about my plans for April, but I believe this question of “why won’t we have chocolate for Easter” is the equally interesting! I hope your month of April has plenty of chocolate, though! I wish you the best! And I hope I can return to this store pretty soon with more crazy tangents of thought! See you again real real real soon, likely this new week! Cheers! Happy April.
