In Which I rewatch one of my fave movies!
Good morning, friends! I wish you the best, and hope you are doing well. I am okay, haven’t managed to sleep too well the past two days, and I pray that today I can sleep better, and in the evening, ideally. How is the weather? Here it keeps going up and down on temperature, as it is the buffer season between Summer and Winter. Easter is also upon us! And this is a wonderful holiday! I wonder what I’ll do next, after writing this post. Hopefully I will figure out something cool. I played Victoria 3 this morning, I am having a match as Japan, and it has been awesome!
Recently, I decided to rewatch the movie Marie Antoinette, that was released in 2006, and was directed by Sofia Coppola. I completely forgot how much I love that movie, and with my new knowledge of the diplomacy of the 18th century, it made for an even more enriching experience! What a terrible situation Marie Antoine was put, when, at the sappling age of 14, was set to marry Louis Auguste, heir to the throne of France. Freaking 14 years old, that is so young! Austria and France were just getting started on an alliance after hundred years of rivalry between the countries, the stakes were as high as they could be. Marie, from her home country, was shipped to a hostile France in order to marry the said Heir, and so produce a son that would crown the union of countries. I have seen that in Europa Universalis, royal Marriages are very important and they can be much rewarding (or a massive pain). I will repeat, 14, barely getting into puberty, and forced to realize the sexual act with a complete stranger, at a distant hostile place. Took them 7 years before they could do it, and that fell heavily upon Marie’s shoulders. Her own mother kept blaming and pressuring her into keep “seducing” her husband. So was everyone, impatiently expecting for the future king of France. The two were not necessarily a match made in heaven. Louis was a gentleman, but shy, clumsy and they had very little hobbies in common, very little they could chat about, therefore their bondship took forever. They did not dislike each other, but they also were not in love. That tepid climate can kill the mood, besides the sheer pressure of securing peace in Europe. But here’s the magic: Marie, against all odds, survived! She managed to fill her life with many beautiful things, such as nice dresses, hairstyles that are so beautiful, music, she made her impact in France, the most stake-high country in Europe, and that is not a small feat. As much miserable emotionally her situation was, she survived, and thrived. That’s the story the movie focus on, her experiences as a young woman, just trying to make the best out of a terrible and crushing situation. It is probably one of the most eye-candy and pleasant motions I’ve ever seen, I can say it is my aesthetic preferences in a nutshell! The colors of this blog and its mood are heavily inspired by the movie and in Marie’s life, that in some ways mirrors my own. Some criticized the picture for not including the diplomatic affairs and political intrigues of the time, but that is the beauty of the movie, it focuses on Marie as a person, as an artistic soul whom loved beautiful things her turbulent life could offer. This movie is mostly based on the most excellent biography by Lady Antonia Fraser, Marie Antoinette: A Journey, which goes to tell the true story of Marie, without the distortions made by the socialists, always them, those evil folk, those who poison the imagination of humanity. I should also mention other book on Marie, by Caroline Webber, called Queen of Fashion. Another masterpiece, that tells the story of Marie through her clothing preferences, and what she wore during her life. I could go on and on talking about Marie, making some parallels between her and another unsuccessful couple, which were the Russian one, a generation earlier, Catherine and Peter III. Another sad couple that took almost a decade to produce a son, and even so, the paternity of said son is not entirely known. I could go on and on. But this post is getting quite big and I don’t want to bother you any further. It is likely the reason why I don’t write much on Marie, when I start I cannot stop, she is my love! One of the women of my life, alongside Margaret Thatcher, Catherine the Great, and Ayn Rand. I vividly recommend the movie, beautiful colors, crazy music, in a good way, and a moving story of this bright personality. One of my favorites, ever.
Thank you so much, dear reader, for being here once again to hang out with me! I appreciate that more than I can say! I hope I can return real soon with more posts, likely I will try to do one Saturday, maybe earlier, maybe later, either way, I also want to wish you a most excellent Easter, and the best! Like I said, real real real soon we shall see each other again, no worries!!! See you then! Bye!
