In Which a delayed book Arrive, and more Anecdotes of December 2024
Before we begin, I would of course like to add on the Habsburg book by Martyn Rady I finally could reach the end. I was angry at him because he did not mention Ludwig von Mises on his list of notables of the Austrian Hungarian Empire. Well, later the author redeems himself with me by doing that. And by giving some nice words on the great economist and thinker. So, I don't curse his name no more, and I give the book a 6 or 7 out of 10. I say that because I did not like the framing of the author in more than one part, did not like his bias on others... in any case, back to today's post, shall we?
Good morning, my good friend and kind reader of this post! I wish you a good Saturday and also a happy new day of the Christmas season 2024! How are you? What is the overall balance concerning the passing week? As for me, I would say I am okay. This Friday was a bit frustrating, given I could not bring myself to do anything I most times do to occupy my free times, such as playing games, writing and reading. I ordered some things for myself this Christmas, including a book on baroque and Rococo art I look forward to reading. Unfortunately, and most aggravating because I paid extra for the book to be delivered, it took quite a bit to arrive. That was a reason I could not focus on anything else but waiting. It is a reason I hate online shopping. I understand it is practical, and the variety is much more present, as well as usually good prices, but the waiting can be an issue. Quite so... in any case, the book arrived on Saturday. I cannot complain of the bookstore, the variety of books there is quite healthy, and the book I got turned out to be a rare one to get, I could not find it anywhere else, not for the same relatively good price. I can, however, complain of the mail system of the country I live in. Remember always that for a private enterprise, a new person expecting the service is a blessing, is a costumer with money, and the costumer is always right. But for a state owned venue, a new person is a bother, it is more toil for the clerk, a drain on "resources", and as such, to be treated with disdain. On that front I should add that many clerks are actually helpful and industrious, but the incentives are pointing towards the other way, in their line of work. The good are punished and the bad, subsidised.
Can you believe it, that we are already 10 days away from the height of the season? What a crazy thing to grasp, how time is going fast. I love the eve and the day, but I dread their passing. I don't want it to ever end, I never do. It takes so long to reach this moment, it goes by so fast... I can only try and take my time to admire as many christmas trees I can, they will soon be gone. How is your season fairing? My own is okay, overall, I am thankful for the good moments and I try my best to stay afloat on the bad ones. I have been trying to find joy in computer games, but at times I do not desire in visiting them. Or most of them anyway. I am still to try the roman city builder recently released, the game Citadelum, as an example. My friend gifted me the game Transport Fever 2, but I haven't tried yet. I should indeed give those a chance at a moment. A game I have been playing much, in contrast, is Victoria 3. The past few days, been trying once more to stabilize France, a task that has become much harder than what it used to be. I also played today some Europa Universalis 4. I have such an ambiguous relationship with this game. It is the most unforgiving one I have, the most harsh, and the most rewarding. It is amazing when things are going well for you, on that game, as like the christmas tree, it is not to be taken for granted. A balance that can be gravely disturbed by any mistake, if you play it on IronMan mode, which I do, because I like the ability to gain the achievements. Victoria 3 proved you don't need the ironman in order for a game to give you achievements and to feel it rewarding, but Victoria 3 was released in October 2022, and Europa came out much much earlier, in 2013, some 11 years ago!
The book is finally here, and I am excited to give it a read!
I am happy I have been drawing more than the usual over the past weeks, I do hope this new week I can do some more. One step at a time... as for tomorrow, I think I will have therapy, so that is good, and perhaps will receive the last of the packages. I am still waiting for a sketchbook and for yet another book, this one is written by Salvador Dali, and is about modern art, and the thoughts of Salvador in it. Given Dali was for much of his life considered one of the modern artists, you would think that he'd be an apologetic for it, but of course real life is much more nuanced than that, and Salvador was, specially later in his life, quite critical of that sort of thing, he being more leaning towards traditionalism in later years, specially concerning his catholicism. I do have a bit of skepticism on Salvador, given he was prone to self promotion, dramatic moves and was quite a meme, but it seems his change of views to be a genuine one. I do value my own skepticism, but I want to give him the benefit of the doubt.
With this, maybe it is time to wrap up today's post? I think so, took me a while today to write this one, given I fell asleep in the middle of its production, but now I am at a point where I an satisfied with what I've got. Of course, do not distress, I should be back soon with more posts on the blog, given I would love to have a productive Christmas season. This week, we will see when I will return, hopefully before next weekend! Until then, thank you so much for being here, my great friend, reader of this post, you know I wish you the best, ane I cherish your company! Farewell, see you again real soon!! Happy Christmas season 2024!
